Varie is introduced in episode 7 of the cut series, 11 of the uncut series. In both cases, it's when Hitomi touches Van's feather and receives images of his past: the truth that his mother is a Draconian, a demon, her meeting with Van's father, her protectiveness over Van and her admonishing his wingful revelation as a child. She is endlessly protective of Van, with reason: her son has inherited her demonic physical qualities. Varie is presumed dead when Van is only five years old; she wanders off after Folken and just doesn't come back. Despite this, she pops up a couple of times in spirit, essentially to nag and put a hell of a lot of pressure on the cast.
At first I had great respect for Varie, how she didn't hesitate to show her wings in order to save Van, how empathetic she was of his situation when he was a youngster. However, her treatment of Hitomi really irked me. She introduces herself without a "hello" "how are you" or "thanks for saving my son a bajillion times". Nope. She bluntly informs Hitomi that it's all her fault. But no pressure. The next episode, 15, she tells Van that the fate of Gaia lies in his hands. Again, no pressure.
Varie never really justifies herself and from a psychologically analytical point of view, never accepts the idea of her son and Hitomi being together. Like the mother-in-law and wife, the two will never mix. In the last episode you see Varie smiling as the couple embraces one last time. I stick to my belief that it was not out of joy for the blossoming romance, but at the exuberance that the woman who would steal away her son was finally leaving.
